Camp Aussicht is situated on top of a hill overlooking Kaokoland. This small but very intimate establishment is far from any modern civilization. Only when you sit back in your camp chair, you realize how privileged you are to be part of the moment. Here it is all about the wilderness, solitude and inner peace. Forget Cellphone and Internet connectivity, uninterrupted tranquility and endless views of rugged mountains set the stage.
Camp Aussicht is rustic, constructed out of natural rock sourced from the area. Each of the chalets are surprisingly comfortable without frills but, offer the necessary luxuries one would not expect in such a remote location. Water is a scarce commodity; every drop is precious. When it rains, water is carefully collected in tanks and sparingly used in the everyday running of the camp and hosting of guests. Guests are so amazed with how little water one can shower and still feel clean. If you are environmentally conscious, you will gain new perspective of how
effective water can be utilized as a natural resource. Camp Aussicht is one of the most environmentally sustainable camps in Namibia.
Marius Steiner is your personal host and guide. He has lived in the Kaokoland and Damaraland for the best part of his life and knows the area and its people like the back of his hand. Marius always aims to host each of his guests in the most personal way possible. He is a one man show who leaves a lasting impression on his guests who often return more than once.
Except for the many indigenous bird species that frequent the camp throughout the day, nocturnal animals such as African porcupine, African wild cat, civet, genets, caracal, jacal and leopard may occasionally be spotted while they silently slip through the camp in search of other smaller critters to hunt. Close to the camp is a small dioptase mine (it is an intense emerald-green to bluish-green copper cyclosilicate mineral) only found in parts of Namibia, Russia and Arizona. The mine is partly open cast and underground. Mr Steiner senior who passed away in 2014 was a geologist who mined minerals for many years in the Kaokoland. His son Marius later joined him and learnt the technique of mining minerals from his father. Aussicht has always been a place where family and friends got together to escape the city to enjoy nature and spend quality time together. Camp Aussicht eventually became a midway stop for other guests and tourist travelling between Palmwag and Epupa. Marius still enjoys excavating his small mine and sharing his deep knowledge with guests who are interested in his way of living.
